IT Initiatives

An organization’s current IT Investment Initiatives are a key predictor of the value that IT will deliver in the future.

There are only two things that will determine the value of each individual IT investment program or project:

The underlying Business Case for the investment; and

Whether the program or project will be successfully delivered.

The value of an organization’s overall IT Investment portfolio, however, is more than just the sum of the benefits that will be delivered by each of the projects. Another critical factor is how well the investments support the business strategies of the organization.

A simple Investment Portfolio Framework like the one pictured at the right can be a useful tool when analysing the investments (not just the IT investments) of any business or business unit. For example, it might not make sense for a business unit in a low margin, low growth market to allocate a majority of their IT investment dollars to Innovation projects.
